Ashbrow Community Project

Drawing on the experience of the childrens work on portraiture on a previous project, Deborah discussed ideas with the children for the proposed mural in the playground. The children put forward ideas of content and composition. The idea of large scale portraits/carocatures set in a rural setting surrounding the school was met with enthusiasm.

Several children helped Deborah realise the mural. Some of the children were nervous - but were put at ease after Deborah explained that she would scale up the drawings in chalk and the children would 'paint by numbers'. Slowly, the children's confidence grew and they enjoyed the process, seeing the mural develop in front of them.

The children even commented that younger brothers and sisters would come to the school after they had left for high school and get comfort in seeingtheir siblings images on the wall.

The mural is a bright cheerful addition to the school and has allowed the children to 'own' their space.
