Deborah came in to speak with the children about aging and to challenge their preconceived ideas of older people
First of all , Deborah used special effects make up techniques on their teacher. She then asked the chidren to welcome the teacher's grandma into the hall to meet them all. The children were invited to ask questions of the teacher 'senior'.
After a few questions about her physical wellbeing, one child asked...."what do you feel like on the inside?"
After an exchange of about 15 minutes, it was clear that the children were pondering the idea that to be old on the outside was different to being old on the inside
At this point, Deborah stood up and told the children that the lady was in fact their teacher and removed her makeup. The children were very surprised! They were very responsive to this whole idea and seemed to enjoy the afternoon - as did the staff!
